Exhibiting & Promoting / South Eastern District Fall meets
« on: February 21, 2017, 03:32:22 PM »
It is a good time to think about where more folks want to gather for the fall meets and get these listed on the website and in the next bulletins.    Please let me know which shows are on your schedules and if you think these might be well attended by those exhibiting Ameraucana LF and Bantams.   Thanks!     Don

Ameraucana Marketplace / LF Breeding Trios Available
« on: December 19, 2016, 08:41:30 AM »
We have a couple of trios of LF Breeding stock available that will make a great start for someone in our region.  A few folks have decided to concentrate on other breeds and are offering their core stock.
They are a group of Blacks from a breeder in KS, and a group of Blues from a breeder in TX.

I would like for these to go to serious breeders and not be lost to a backyard layer flock.   Feel free to send me an email if you are interested and able to come to our place or meet us at a show early this winter.  Shipping is not available.  I will be happy to talk to you more in depth about either group

Exhibiting & Promoting / Rotation of ABC National meets
« on: October 11, 2016, 05:19:05 PM »
There have been several questions about where the National Meet location are decided.  The rotation is basically clock wise thru all of the Districts.  There have been some modifications to allow the ABC National align with larger ABA or APA meets thru the years.  And the Board has the ability to request these modifications.  And there have been some changes to the District configurations thru the years too.  But the current rotation is as listed below.

Last year 2015 it was in the South Central District at Fayetteville AR
This year 2016 it will be held in the Western District at Caldwell ID
Next year 2017 it will rotate to the North Central District.  Jerry and Gordon have listed some options for the        members to comment.
In 2018 it will rotate to the North Eastern District
And in 2019 it will rotate to the South Eastern District.

Again, there can be changes to this rotation for special situations.  But the goal is to get the National in a location so that more members feel they can travel to enjoy the National Meet.

« on: July 05, 2016, 05:30:10 PM »
Welcome to all of the new members and I hope that many of you can get out to some of the districts shows this fall.  Take a moment to read the info on the website regarding ABC meet requirements There are already meets set for the district in the SE, especially in South Carolina.  And we have a number of locations started for the North Carolina shows as well.  Please feel free to contact me to request meets or suggest locations for the SE District meet this fall.  I look forward to meeting some of the new folks this fall and catching up with some of the previous members too.      Thanks!       Don    drccash@yahoo.com

Ameraucana Marketplace / Breeding stock Available - Several Varieties
« on: June 09, 2016, 09:25:36 AM »
We have a breeder who is reducing the varieties they keep at their farm.  There will be stock from a number of national flocks depending on the variety.  Would much prefer meeting up with someone so they can see the stock before purchase.  It would be great to have some new folks in the Carolinas or the area around these states.
Feel free to drop me a note with questions.  drccash@yahoo.com  Thanks!

I hope many of you can make it out to the show March 26.  I know its another show on Easter Weekend.  That's what happens when your show is always the last weekend in March.  If Easter would just stay on a predictable tract.  Come on out to the show to talk AMs and hope some of you can show as well.  It is spring, Anyone up for an egg show at this one?

And Greensboro is a few weeks after that if can make that one too.    Good Luck and hope to see you there!

Exhibiting & Promoting / Hardware Store chicks
« on: March 05, 2016, 02:31:14 PM »
The Hardware store chicks are beginning to show up now.  So be aware when you see folks buying chicks.  We know that the lot labeled as Ameraucanas/Araucanas are not true AMs.  Most of the sales clerks don't know the difference, and i expect don't care either.  "That's what the hatchery told us they were" is all that they know to say.  Be Kind.  Most folks don't really care until they start to show and that's usually when the good judges will point out their errors.

Also, a friend decided to get RIR pullets from TSC a few years back.  After he had fed them for about 5 months, he asked me to come help him decide which were male and female.  He had a 8 chicks and they were growing into nice big males.  Mistake perhaps?

Exhibiting & Promoting / South Eastern Shows
« on: February 19, 2016, 07:48:33 AM »
I hope that everyone is having a great late winter and Breeding season.  I also hope you have a good group of Ameraucanas that you can bring out to the shows this spring.  Last fall showing was closed in NC and was restricted in a number of other states.  But right now that door is open and we can all enjoy a good show or two.
We have a number of ABC meets in the next few months, Neuwman GA, Edgefield SC, LakeCity SC, Winston-Salem NC, and Greensboro NC.  Take advantage in these locations and bring out some good birds to show.  Even if they are not in perfect shape, you will enjoy the time out and see how your birds are doing compared to others.  But even if you just don't have anything to show right now, come on out, meet some new folks and learn more about the breed and have a great time.  I Look forward to hopefully seeing some of you at a few of these shows.

And please let me know if you have other local shows where you want to have ABC meets.  The goal is to have three members there to help support the breed.     Have a great spring!

Housing, Health & Hatching / Poultry Tractors
« on: January 30, 2016, 02:38:32 PM »
I've had a request for information on "Tractors" or movable pens that we have or would like to build.  I have used a few of these for several years for small groups of birds both for breeding and grow out pens.  The nice thing is that they have access to fresh grass/ground with less mess.  The down side is that they really need to be moved often because they will destroy a patch of ground in short order.  So the tractor needs to be light enough to move easily but heavy enough for wind stability and to deter predators.  I have several that I made earlier that have become stationary pens now that my helpers have grown up and moved away.  I will try to get a few pictures of the ones that I am using as soon as our snow/mud goes away.  Anyone else have a design that they would like to build or are currently using?

This link is to Patty Pickard's website where she shared info about her farm.   Patty was a really great asset to the breeds that she raised. And her version was pretty simple and useful for the AM bantams that she bred.   Sadly I doubt that her family still offers these for sale though now.

There may be a trio of Large Fowl silvers available for someone that wants to work with the variety.  Hopefully they would be able to raise a good group of chicks each season and help get these out to others in the region was well as show and promote the variety.  Anyone interested feel free to drop me an email for details.

The two meets were hosted at a Double show by Sandlappers Poultry Club yesterday, Saturday Dec 5th in Blacksville SC.  We had some great exhibitors from three states showing more than twice the number of LF than bantams.  But the bantams were well represented in 6 colors.  Its great to see bantams shown in our area for new folks to see.
LF were exhibited in 7 colors as well.  It was good to see some of the more rare colors shown and it would be great to see more shows with this kind of color diversity representing the breed.

Several of the winners in LF went on to achieve higher wins in both shows.  And its always good to see the breed represented on Champion row.  Also, it's great to see some of the more rare colors not only shown, but reaching prestige wins in the breed and then winning further levels as well.

We enjoyed some good time with folks attending the show.  Its always good to get together and talk AMs and share stories of what was learned from last years pairings.  It was great to study some of the colors in the standard with several of the members.  We can all learn together when questions are raised a shows, even if you do have to sometimes go into the Old English cages to see examples of the standard colors moved closer to perfection.  And there were some new folks to come out to see and enjoy the breed at this show.  I think a few people left with new stock and I hope that they will be back to shows soon with exhibits of of their own.

There was a good bit of ribbing going on after the first judging.  Needless to say, some of us were happy to be able to contribute points to Susan and Maggie in their wins for this show.  I hope to see greater and more diverse varieties at the shows in the spring.  We hope the bans will be fully lifted and folks can get out and bring their birds to the shows.  Meets are set for March and April already.

Congratulations to all of the winners!  I am sure there were some birds treated to very special accommodations and feeds this morning after their trip home.  And a special thanks to the Sandlappers Club members for all their hard work and hospitality to bring things together.  They were great hosts and there are other meets being discussed for this location as we speak.

Exhibiting & Promoting / South East District Meet Dec 5, 2015
« on: November 16, 2015, 12:26:24 PM »
There is still plenty of time for entry and reservations into the SE District meet the first Saturday of December.  This is a double show which also includes the South Carolina State meet so there will be plenty of chances for point winnings.  Susan has confirmed that we can P/T test at the door for anyone that has not completed NPIP for the year.  And there are not requirements for AI testing.  There is a $50 cash award for Champion Ameraucana and hopefully there will be both bantam and LF in various classes.

Its a great place to show your birds, lots closer than the National in Arkansas.  So plan your entries and come on up/down to the South state and enjoy some good competition and fellowship.  We look forward to seeing you there.
