No, not really. Just a theory. They seem to be more uniform and evenly colored with the yellow down.

I have found that with the chick down the darker the blue the better. Also I look for more yellow down on the chest and belly instead of the white. They seem to be the most uniform in color when they grow out. The edging seems to be more defined as well. They don't really have true lacing...yet. To be continued.... :)

The color blue is highly variable in expression. I can tell you from experience that when breeding black to splash the shade of blue will be all over the scale. There will be some that are terribly patterned but there will also be some that are extremely beautiful. Some of my best blues have come from a black/splash breeding. You just have to dig through the trash to find the treasure...  ;)

Here is information of where I bought boxes a while back. You can try there, too:

Barnes Paper Company.  Their head quarters is in Birmingham, AL. but the chick boxes are shipped out of Springdale, Arkansas. Their number is:  479-756-3350.

This is where I get mine as well. I ordered 50 (25 chick size) boxes with lids for $100 shipping included.

Ok, I've edited the original post.

Much better. Thanks for editing...

Thanks, everyone! Congratulations to all the winners! We had a great time. Mike, Mary, John, and Kathy are some of the nicest people you could ever meet. It was an honor to hang out with them.

This show was worth the trip. Being the relatively new guy, I was humbled by all the poultry veterans surrounding me, although I didn't know most of them. Seeing what they have accomplished with their years of hard work was amazing. I am definitely planning to attend again next year. I hope more ABC members can make it.

The hatchery tour was pretty cool too. Here are some pictures...

I called McMurray twice to verify the time of the tour and couldn't get a definite answer. I was put on hold both times. One said to just show up any time and the other said it was at 6:30pm. I wasn't convinced by either answer.

Max, by chance would you have one available at the Master Cup show?   I could pick it up for him there.

I have several young blue cockerels I have been saving to use as backups. They are just now getting filled out. I will bring a few with me and you can choose the one you like the best.

I entered eight. Six LF Blacks and two LF Blues. Enough for an exhibitor display plus one. I am an avid deer hunter myself but I only hunt with archery equipment. There will be plenty of time to hunt. This show is only for one weekend... ;)

We had a poodle when I was a kid and I lost more chickens to that dog than I did to all other predators combined...  >:(

The part I'm looking forward to the most is the tour of McMurray Hatchery.
Yep! I hear you John. Some of my best memories as a young boy were ordering chicks from McMurray. I believe it was 1981 when I mailed in my first order. The anticipation of the post office calling was torture! It would be pretty cool to see their operation... Alright, I'm leaning heavily towards going now. ;D

Ok! I'm leaning a little more towards attending. From what I've read it's supposed to be like the "Superbowl" of poultry shows. I bet there will be a lot of solid black and solid white birds. They are hard to beat.

Is anyone planning to enter this show? I have been considering it for a while. I know I may be out of my league but I think it would be fun to attend. There is one week left to decide...  :-\
