Housing, Health & Hatching / Re: In Preparation for hatching
« on: December 15, 2013, 06:13:26 PM »
I agree with Mike. I think a lot of hatching problems stem from flock maintenance, not the incubators. As far as the incubators and hatchers go, I start with a thorough cleaning with Tek-Trol disinfectant solution. I usually run the incubators and hatchers for a couple of days to check for constant temperature and humidity and see that the egg turners are operating properly. If not, its maintenance time for heat elements, thermostats, motors etc. I try to have spare parts on stock at all times. Nothing worse than having a part go
out 2 weeks into a hatch cycle. With the Hatcher available I can transfer eggs and keep them warm while I make repairs and get back in business.

Exhibiting & Promoting / Re: Winter Bulletin
« on: December 09, 2013, 05:27:57 PM »
John, My camera is froze up! Minus 8 this morning and single digits for the high. 4 days of this and I've already had enough winter. The next weeks forecast - slightly warmer for a couple of days then back down. I had my first casualty of the cold weather today, an older hen that won't see another winter. I know those north of here are suffering also-keep the faith and keep the birds warm. Would hand warmers tied to feet and under wings help?

Duane, I didn't get to stay at the table as I was clerking most of the time. Membership forms and info for new members on the incubator raffle were taken. I hope they get filled out and sent in. Worth a try!

The Nebraska State Poultry Show is now history. There were approx. 900 entries at the show. Ameraucana entries were 12 LF and 1 Bantam by 3 exhibiters. BB was a Black cockerel who was also BAOSB. RB was a Wheaten pullet. Both were day old chicks that I purchased from Paul and Angela Smith. Thanks Paul and Angela!!!!!! I also set up a small table for the ABC club with membership forms, information sheets on the  raffle for new 2014 members for the incubator, and ABC Flyers. Now for some much needed R&R.

John, you got my brain stirred up. I think that I will print off some ABC application sheets for our show. Paper is cheap and who knows, maybe someone will join!

Actually Duane it was her father (my brother) who started her at a young age. He was the one that gave me the bug but later in life. I did get Vicki the Ameraucana slant as I gave her some eggs to hatch. She even beat me on a Blue pullet at last years show. I'm facing an uphill battle as she is a Maran person at heart. With that said, I still need to convince her to join the Ameraucana Club.

« on: September 17, 2013, 12:22:02 PM »
Show catalogs are now ready for the Nebraska State Poultry Show Nov 2-3 in Lincoln Nebraska. You can download catalogs and entry forms on the club website www.nestatepoultryshow.com or contact the show secretary Vicki Gilliam 612-384-8217 or gilavina@hotmail.com . Entries are due by Oct 24, 2013. In addition to any awards and prize money, there will be a $30 cash award for BB LF Champion Ameraucana Open Show and $30 cash award for BB Bantam Champion Ameraucana Open Show. Also a $30 cash award for BB LF Champion Ameraucana Junior Show and $30 cash award for BB Bantam Ameraucana Junior Show. Junior Show entries are automatically entered also in the Open Show at no additional charge. This would make it possible for a Junior to win $60 in either LF or Bantam Class for the price of a Junior Entry Fee if they would win the Junior and Open Class with their entry. Come on Juniors, show those older exhibitors you have what it takes (Or at least your birds do). I hope to see you there! Gordon

Beth, In the words of the actor Artie Johnson "very interesting". That blew me away about the 100% results of your type 2 & 3 chicks.

Exhibiting & Promoting / Re: Splash - Who is breeding them?
« on: August 21, 2013, 10:44:42 AM »
I am just starting my 5th year on Splash in both LF and Bantam. Like Russ, I do not keep many Splash for breeders that result from Blue/Blue breeding. I do not breed Splash/Splash as I only use Splash to develop my Blues.

Exhibiting & Promoting / Popularity of bantams
« on: June 15, 2013, 02:22:49 PM »
Mike, It seems like the demand for bantams has waned the last few years. It seems like everyone wants LF. This is not only for Ameraucanas, but other breeds also. Maybe this is just a phase we are going through and will turn around down the road.
