Marking your Ameraucana
« on: March 02, 2026, 09:10:56 AM »
A breeder asked how to mark their Ameraucana. Here are some helpful tips.

Breeders mark day old chicks, juvenile birds and adult birds for a variety of reasons. Tracking lineage, promoting specific genetics, ensuring diversity in future pairings, monitoring a bird's age, sorting males from females, and tracking how specific birds perform at poultry shows are all examples of why it is important to mark and track your Ameraucana.

You can use a variety of methods to mark your Ameraucana, from toe punching the webs on their feet, to applying wing bands, to applying spiral leg bands, to using a more permanent leg band that requires an applicator for use.

By marking your Ameraucana, you can take steps to understand and improve your breeding program.

Keep in mind that some options are more permanent while other options are less permanent.
